A transfer to Sage in the fall of 2010 from Queens University of Charlotte, Kelsey Newberg has certainly made the most of her time as a Sage student-athlete. A one-time member of the Gator volleyball team in the fall of 2010, she shifted her focus to the softball diamond where she has excelled.

As a junior, she was named to the 2012 Eastern College Athletic Conference All-Star Second Team after also earning a spot on the 2012 Skyline Conference All-Star First Team as a utility player. She dominated in the circle and at the plate and was a versatile performer as one of the team’s top utility players. Newberg broke a pair of long-standing Sage strikeout records for both a season and career. She fanned 119 batters in 2012 to own the single-season record. She upped her career resume to include 187 career strikeouts, an active Sage career mark she will continue to add to this season.

She went 16-9 in 2012 and her 16 wins in a season is another Gator record. In the circle for Sage last year, Newberg fanned 10 or more batters twice, including an 11-strikeout effort as Sage bested Cazenovia in the team's home opener. She added a pair of saves as well this year, while garnering a 3.08 ERA in 30 appearances. Newberg's success was not limited to her time as a pitcher as she added a .306 batting average with 45 hits and 24 RBIs with 31 runs scored.  Her 45 hits ranks No. 7 in single-season performances, while her 147 at-bats in third best. She added seven doubles and ranks 13th in the single-season record book, while her 31 runs scored in fourth highest.

Newberg, who is an accomplished scholar-athlete at Sage, has been instrumental in her role as president of Sage's S.A.A.C., which participated in a number of community service projects as the NY State Special Olympics Fall Games, the Special Olympics' Polar Plunge. Last spring, while in season, she participated and organized a spirit lifting project at the pediatrics wing of nearby Albany Medical Center. For her efforts on behalf of Sage's student-athletes, she was named the recipient of the 2012 ECAC Merit Medal.

As a sophomore at Sage, she went 4-8 in 86.0 innings of work with a 3.99 ERA in 14 appearances. A starter in 12 games in 2011, she struck out 68 and held the opposition to a .276 average, while working in the circle. She batted .274 and had 17 hits in 62 at-bats with a .400 on-base percentage.

She was a two-sport standout at New Britain High School, where she excelled in both volleyball and softball. A four-time all-conference performer, she was a two-time team captain for the softball team. She helped her team advance to the second round of the state championship tournament.  Named the 2011 Gator Award winner in softball, Newberg is a Dean’s List student and is also a member of the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society. She is also a member of the Sigma Theta Tau National Nursing Honor Society and the Women’s Studies Honor Society.  President of the Student Nurse Association at Sage, she is a student worker in the admission office at Sage. A   nursing major at Sage with a minor in women’s studies, Newberg is the daughter of Fredrick and Judith Newberg.
